Left Forum 2012: Multiple Displacements: Neoliberalism, Gentrification, and Resistance in China, Chinatown and Beyond with Ellen David Friedman
The left frequently refers to gentrification in the context of neoliberalism and the housing crisis in United States. However, land grabs are occurring all over the world for the purpose of "economic development." This panel will explore how local processes of gentrification interconnect with neoliberal capitalism by making connections between struggles against displacement in Chinatown of New York City and in China, looking at issues such as labor, housing, and migration in a global context. This is Part 1 of a two-part panel on Organizing Asian Communities, organized by CAAAV.
Ellen David Friedman worked as a union organizer for about 30 years in the U.S. before "redeploying" to China about 10 years ago, where she now spends half of each year teaching labor studies at Sun Yat-sen University, developing an international Labor Center within the university, and participating in the Chinese labor movement at various levels.
